CCT / tunable white, explained.

The short answer: a CCT (tunable white) strip carries two whites — warm and cool — on separate channels. Blend them and one strip covers everything from candle-warm 2200K to daylight 6500K, changeable at any moment. With an analog controller running ESPHome, that blend shows up in Home Assistant as one light with a native colour-temperature slider. This guide covers what the numbers mean, why analog does white best, and the exact config.

What the Kelvin numbers mean

Colour temperature describes where a white sits between amber-warm and blue-cool, in kelvin. Lower is warmer. In a real home:

2200KCandle / sunset warm. Unwinding in the evening, coves, bedrooms.
2700KClassic incandescent. The "cosy bulb" most people grew up with.
3000–3500KSoft white. Comfortable general living light.
4000–4500KNeutral. Kitchens, bathrooms, workbenches — alert but not clinical.
5000–6500KDaylight. Task work, true-colour checking, video sets.

The trouble with fixed-white strips is that the right answer changes through the day. The light you want at 9 in the morning is not the light you want at 11 at night. Tunable white means you stop choosing.

How a CCT strip actually works

A CCT strip alternates two LED types along its length — warm white (typically ~2200–2700K) and cool white (~6000–6500K) — wired as two separate channels sharing a positive. The controller dims each channel independently: full warm at bedtime, an even mix for neutral, full cool for task work. The blend happens in light, on the strip — smoothly, with no pixels or data lines involved.

Why analog strips do white better

Addressable (pixel) strips are wonderful for colour and motion — that's what QuinLED's Dig-Next line is for. But for white light you live and film under, analog wins on the things that matter:

The one thing to insist on is dimming quality: a slow PWM controller will make any strip band on camera and feel harsh at the low end. The An-Penta line dims at ~20 kHz with 12-bit resolution, so the blend stays smooth from full daylight to a barely-glowing 2200K.

The ESPHome config (this is the whole trick)

ESPHome's cwww light platform turns two PWM outputs into one proper tunable-white light. Here it is for an An-Penta-Mini using its two 5A channels — the pins below are the Mini's; other boards differ only in pin numbers (see your board's guide):

Which board for tunable white?

A CCT zone needs two channels. One zone: the Mini (its two 5A channels are made for exactly this — and it still has three channels spare). The practical takeaway: buy a dual-white (CCT) strip instead of a fixed white, give it two fused channels on an An-Penta, and let ESPHome blend them. Common questions

What is a CCT or tunable white LED strip?
A strip with two whites — warm and cool — on separate channels. The controller blends them, so one strip covers ~2200K to ~6500K, adjustable any time. Also sold as "tunable white", "WW/CW" or "dual white".
What colour temperature for a living room?
Typically 2200–2700K for evenings, 3000–4000K for general living. But that's the point of tunable white: automate it — warm after sunset, neutral by day — instead of picking one number forever.
Can RGBCCT strips do this too?
Yes — RGBCCT is the same warm + cool pair with RGB alongside, on five channels. You get the full tunable-white range and colour when you want it. One RGBCCT strip fits a Mini exactly; the Deca runs three of them independently.
Does blending two whites cost brightness?
At the extremes you're mostly driving one of the two channels, so a CCT strip's maximum output at 2200K or 6500K is roughly half its mid-blend total. In practice: size the strip generously, and remember the An-Penta has the current headroom to drive dense, bright dual-white strips properly.
